June 4, 2020 by Maria Giovanni

What makes your cat gobble up some food and bother less with others? Is there more to cat food than what the cat likes? Join as we compare some cat food features that make these brands popular.

With the wide array of cat food brands and flavors in the market today, it can be confusing to know which one to pick to ensure your cat remain healthy while enjoying every meal. The confusion is further multiplied when cat experts share their opinions. The problem being that these opinions sometimes take opposite ends of a matter. For example, should fish be kicked out of a cat’s diet? Weruva and Tiki Cat are two reputable cat food manufacturers that have been in operation for almost the same period of time. They both emphasize on high quality ingredients, and avoid food color, preservatives and artificial flavors. Whereas Tiki Cat produces some dry cat food, Weruva only focuses on wet food. Which therefore is the better brand?

Weruva Vs Tiki Cat – How Do They Compare?

Protein Content

AAFCO requires a minimum 26% crude protein dry matter content. Tiki Cat’s crude protein content of its wet/canned line stands at 64.7% Weruva’s comes at a close 60.6%. Proteins are very vital in a cat’s diet. Cat’s use them as a source of fuel, even as they contribute to the growth and development of the cats’ bodies and the fighting of diseases.

Tiki Cat’s high protein content comes predominantly from sea food such as tuna and salmon. Most of Tiki Cat’s products are fish-flavored to the delight of many cats. Though Weruva also has fish based products, its major protein source is mostly from poultry and beef cuts which make it health for cats. Most people laud the rich omega 3 and 6 fatty acids from fish as being beneficial to cats’ skin and hair health. Some however believe most of the fish making pet food is contaminated with toxins and heavy metals. The good thing about Weruva is that the chicken flavors are free of fish while the fish flavors are free from chicken. Tiki Cat blends the two in many cases.

Fat, Fiber and Carbohydrates

Moderate dietary fat is important for cats as it slows development of certain medical conditions like cancer, high blood pressure and yeast infections. Tiki Cat’s wet cat food has more fat compared to Weruva. Though cats do not metabolize carbohydrates, carbohydrate content below 10% is not harmful to them. Weruva cat food is has some carbohydrates and fiber from plant starch ingredients like potatoes which are not very popular in cat food. Tiki Cat’s wet foods have almost no carbohydrates while the dry food products have minimal. Though having considerable less fiber than Weruva, Tiki Cat’s fiber content still meets the AAFCO standards. In addition, some of Tiki Cat’s products contain pumpkin to help with digestion.

Wet Food Vs Dry Food

Weruva does not make dry cat food at all. Its wet food products have a moisture content of about 85%, which promotes urinary tract health. Tiki Cat has a wide variety of wet food products, with a smaller dry food line. The brand’s wet food has moisture contents of 78%. This also is still pretty high. Evolutionally, cats need to meet their water requirements from their food. Inadequate hydration may lead to bladder and kidney problems.

Cats whose diet is exclusively dry food may drink water, but they don’t drink enough of it to sustain their body functions. Many people however prefer to mix their pet’s diet – giving dry food kibble treats and snacks in alternation with wet food meals. This enables the cat to eat the recommended small portions throughout the day. Besides, proponents of dry cat food insist the food helps with dental hygiene as the cat chews on it. This claim is however refuted by proponents of wet cat food.

Conclusion

Both brands manufacture their cat food in Thailand under very high standards. Weruva only has the wet food product line. Its fish and chicken flavors are never blended together. Tiki Cat on the other hand has a variety of wet food lines, and some dry food options. The brand capitalizes on cats love for fish to blend most of its meat products with fish. If you prefer just the wet food diet, and one you get to choose the flavor, then Weruva will suit you better. However, if you love mixing things a bit – some fish, some chicken or wet, dry- then you are better off with Tiki Cat.

Verdict: Which is Better – Weruva or Tiki Cat

Tiki Cat offers a wide range of wet food products, and even throws a little dry food in the mix. This offers a large variety to choose from. It is fairer in price and cats may not mind the fish blend. For these reasons, the brand is our top pick. It would be good to ascertain the safety of the fish, however.
